走近诺贝尔化学奖得主根岸英一教授

Interview of Prof. Ei-ichi Negishi

     20121023日下午,2010年诺贝尔化学奖得主根岸英一教授同武大学子一起,气氛温馨地探讨人生理想。

  当被问及在诺贝尔奖评选中落选的、但同样很优秀的科学家时,根岸英一教授笑着回答说,诺贝尔评选机构是由人操作的,是人就不免要犯错误。所以不能期待它能选出完美的结果。他也曾反对过诺贝尔奖的结果,但没有得到回应。每一项诺贝尔奖最多只能由三人共享,一年最多只能颁发给十八个人。可是他认为仅在日本就有近十人同他一样有资格获奖,但命运垂青的毕竟是少部分人。

    在问到获得诺贝尔奖对生活有什么改变时,他摊开双手,慈祥地笑着说它完完全全改变了他的生活。仅去年一年他就举办高达105场讲座,到过15个国家,踏过5大洲,但他享受这种生活。诺贝尔奖让他得到了世界的认可。

        回想他的青年时代,他依旧笑着说他爱音乐,音乐与他的学习工作生活不仅不冲突,有时还有帮助。年轻时他也曾着迷于哲学和宗教,但他发现科学与文学艺术走向两个完全不同的方向,而他更喜欢物理数学,虽然后来走入了应用性更高的化学领域。

        谈到他喜欢的几何,他高兴地问到你们知道毕达哥拉斯定理吗?围绕在周围的学生点头。那知道怎么证明吗?大家低头思考着。他拿来一张纸,画出直角三角形,依各边画正方形,最后做了一条垂直线。把最后一步留给了学生。他说他曾经一次在机场候机的时候证明的,花了半个小时。随后他又在纸上写了学术研究的三重境界:第一,学习知识;第二,理解知识;第三,发现知识。普通学生会学习,优秀学者会理解,顶尖科学家会发现。希望你们能一步步攀岩到科学的高峰!

  他继续说,1901-2000年间得过诺贝尔奖的人大概有1000人,世界上存在过的人大概有10,000,000,000人,所以得诺贝尔奖的概率是1/10,000,000。在坐的各位来自优秀高中,现在于优秀大学学习,从大学以优异成绩毕业后就跻身于前1/1000,如果像他那样拿到美国大学全额奖学金赴美留学,则又向成功迈出了一步。博士毕业后,他收到了三份录取,一份来自1979年获诺贝尔化学奖获得者赫伯特·布朗,也就是后来对他影响颇大的导师;另外一份来自发现卡尔文碳循环的1961年诺贝尔化学奖得主卡尔文.M。他成为布朗四百个学生中两个获得诺贝尔奖中的一个,成为这些科学家中的1/200。这一步步的努力最终让他成为名垂青史的诺贝尔奖获得者。

    最后,他给我们看了几期日本权威报纸,它的12个专栏分别由政界、科学界、文学界等领域精英撰写,他负责其中一个版面,虽然很忙但他乐在其中。其中一期中央有他、理查德·赫克铃木章的照片,将载有他们签名的椅子赠送给诺贝尔博物馆;一张是瑞典公主维多利亚和瑞典国王接见根岸英一教授,晚宴期间根岸英一教授发表了演说。当时国王坐的是一号位,皇后二号位,根岸英一是三号位。

    时间不知不觉过了一个半小时,根岸英一教授结束了与我们的谈话,但他具有启发性的话语永远留在我们的脑海中。

Prof. Negishi gave a lecture at the Luojia Lecture, Wuhan Univ.

In the afternon of Oct. 22nd,2012, Prof. Ei-ichi Negishi gave a Luojia Lecture entitled with “Pursue  your  dreams  with  eternal  optimism!——d-Block  transition  metal  catalysts  in  organic  synthesis  for  a  sustainable  and  prosperous  world  in  the  21st  century  and  beyond ” to all the students in Wuhan University in new library.

During the lecture, prof. Negishi gave a brief introduction about his research odyssey, and how his work was taken seriously and important, and finally won the Nobel Prize in 2010. Prof. Negishi also showed his recent works to the audience. During the lecture, prof. Negishi stressed it for several times that it is very important to have the abilities of research, creativity, exploration and independence in scientific research. After the lecture, he also answered the students and prof Aiwen Lei’s questions.

Also, prof. Negishi was invited as an honourary professor of Wuhan University.

10月22日,诺贝尔化学奖获得者、美国普渡大学布朗化学研究室特聘教授根岸英一(Ei-ichi Negishi)登临珞珈讲坛第52讲,并被授予武汉大学名誉教授称号。

常务副校长冯友梅授予其珞珈讲坛纪念证书和武汉大学名誉教授证书。化学与分子科学学院院长周翔主持。

根岸英一以《永远乐观地追求你的梦想——有机合成中的d区过渡金属对未来世界的可持续发展和繁荣的影响和意义》为题,介绍了自己获得诺奖的过程,以及正在研究的内容。他反复强调,科研创新,探索和独立判断能力,在科学研究中极其重要。

为了一睹诺奖得主的风采,报告开始前1小时,偌大的图书馆总馆报告厅已被挤得水泄不通。面对同学的各种热心提问,根岸英一细致解答,迷人的笑容和优雅的言谈赢得阵阵掌声。

根岸英一,1935年出生于中国长春,日本东京大学毕业,因在“有机合成中的钯催化交叉偶联反应”方面做出贡献,与理查德·赫克、铃木章共同获得2010年诺贝尔化学奖。

Prof. Yasuhiro Uozumi Vistied Our Lab

Prof. Yasuhiro Uozumi (Institute for Molecular Science in Japan) visited our lab on 21st Oct.. In the morning on 22nd Oct., he gave us an impressive lecture entitled with“NCN Pincer Palladium Complexes —– Their Preparation via a Ligand Introduction Route and Their Catalytic Properties”, and after the lecture, he also discussed several questions with Prof. Aiwen Lei and students. We had a nice discussion with Prof. Yasuhiro Uozumi and learned much from Prof. Yasuhiro Uozumi’s lecture about the chemistry of Pincer Palladium Complexes. We really appreciated Prof. Yasuhiro Uozumi’s kind discussion and good suggestions.

Welcome Prof. Carsten Bolm to Our Lab

Mr. Carsten Bolm, professor of RWTH Aachen University, associate editor for journal of organic chemistry,  paid a visit to our lab in Oct. 17, 2012. He gave us a wonderful speech entitled with ‘Catalysis with iron salts: What we learnt and where it directed us’. Then, our students shown Prof. Carsten Bolm around our laboratory. After a welcoming dinner with students, he toured the beautiful campus of Wuhan University and made a deep discussion with Prof. Aiwen Lei and students.He also had a ping-pang match with Prof. Aiwen Lei and other students during rest time. 

Prof. Ruben Martin Romo Vistied Our Lab

Prof. Ruben Martin Romo (Institut Català d’Investigació Química, Spain) visited our lab on 13th Oct.. In the morning on 14th Oct., he gave us a impressive lecture entitled “Turning simplicity into complexity via activation of inert bonds”, and after the lecture, he also discussed several questions with Prof. Aiwen Lei and students in the lecture. In the afternoon and the third day of his visit, our students made presentation about their works, and get some valuable advices from Prof. Ruben. At last, Prof. Ruben paid a visit to the yellow crane tower along with our students.

A novel silver-mediated highly selective C–H/N–H oxidative cross-coupling/cyclization between 2-aminopyridines and terminal alkynes has been demonstrated. This approach provided a simple way to construct heteroaromatic imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines. By using this protocol, the marketed drug zolimidine (antiulcer) could be synthesized easily.

Prof. Peter Kündig and Prof. Zhaomin Hou Visited Our Lab

Prof. Peter Kündig (University of Geneva, Switzerland) and Prof. Zhaomin Hou(侯召民) (RIKEN, The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, Japan) visited our lab in 9th Oct. They gave us two lectures entitled “Iron- and Ruthenium-Lewis Acids. Syntheses and Applications in [3+2] and [4+2] Cycloaddition Reactions” and “Cu-catalyzed carboxylation with CO2” respectively. They also had discussion with Prof. Aiwen Lei, Prof. Chunjiang Wang, Prof. Xiang Zhou and students during their stay in Wuhan.
